Over decades, standard concrete tanks break down. The primary culprit is hydrogen sulfide gas pooling in the air pocket above the water level. Combined with constant moisture, this gas creates sulfuric acid that rots concrete walls and drops internal dividing baffles.

Concrete tanks naturally degrade over decades due to hydrogen sulfide gas corrosion. Warning signs that your tank is failing include sinking or sagging concrete lids, chronic indoor plumbing backups despite recent pumping, or saturated, foul-smelling soil directly over the tank location.
Both materials are highly effective when installed correctly. Concrete tanks are heavy and extremely durable but susceptible to long-term gas corrosion. Polyethylene (plastic) tanks are immune to gas corrosion and rust, making them incredibly long-lasting, though they require specific bedding techniques during installation. We evaluate your soil and site access to recommend the best option.
It depends on the component. If a mechanical pump fails or a single lateral line is blocked by roots, a targeted repair is much cheaper. However, if a concrete tank is structurally crumbling or an entire drain field has reached biological failure (total biomat sealing), a complete engineered replacement is required by county code and is the only permanent solution.
